Regulated work requires the right process
South African asbestos work is governed by the Asbestos Abatement Regulations. Duties vary by work category and can include identification, risk assessment, plans of work, notification, registered contractors, monitoring, disposal and records.
SBS does not publish blanket certification claims. Required competent and registered parties are established for the specific project before regulated work proceeds.
Removal is only half the roofing project
After old roof covering is removed, the building still needs a properly specified weather-tight replacement. The scope can include inspection of exposed supports, agreed repairs, new covering, flashings, penetrations, ridges, barges and rainwater interfaces.
Planning removal and replacement together reduces the risk of a gap between specialist asbestos work and the roofing work that follows.
No shortcuts around suspected asbestos
Suspected asbestos-containing material should not be casually cut, drilled, ground or disturbed. The work category and required controls must be established before removal begins.
The final scope should identify the removal pathway, replacement roof and records or clearance requirements applicable to the work.
